Following an enthusiastic viral response to the work-in-progress showing in last summer’s New Original Works Festival at REDCAT, Sebastian Hernandez will present a fully realized run of his dance/art project, “Hypanthium,” at the downtown theater below Disney Hall this Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 24-26, at 8:30 p.m.

This evening-length premiere is described in promotional materials as a “collage” of activity within which the choreographer and performers Angel Acuña and Autumn Randolph “synthesize a pseudo kinship of queer femme moving bodies in Los Angeles, while recognizing the intensity of a hegemonic project that tries to assimilate them.” Titled by the term that describes the part of a rose that holds the nectar, the current rendition enriches what was done in the summer with contributions from Andrew Eastmen (sound), Gabriela Ruiz (performance art), Derek Holguin (digital video), and Rafa Esparza and Maria Meae (visual art).

Wrestling with memories of ancient trauma amidst more immediate concerns for sisterhood, space, power and survival, the ensemble weaves “sensuality, fierceness and touches of wry humor” to navigate its visceral movement montage.
