Making its debut at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya), Aix-en-Provence-based Ballet Preljocaj (pronounced Prel-zho-cazh) will present its 2016 creation “La Fresque (or The Painting on the Wall)” on Thursday, April 18, at 8 p.m. Based on “The Mural,” a Chinese traditional folk story first published in 1740, the highly acclaimed choreographer brings a 10-member company to explore the ideas of illusion and transcendence in movement, sound, set design, lighting and costumes/masks.

The dance maker maintains the essence of this tale while bringing a more contemporary perspective into its symbolism and metaphor. Following the allegorical retelling of a man’s fascination with art and his step into another dimension, the collaborating artists reveal a supernatural power in visual art, and now live performance.

Angelin Preljocaj and his companies have been coming to the Southland since the late 1990s, earning accolades for the dynamic dancing and his inventive interpretations of fairy tales, classic literature and music. The company performs internationally throughout the year and this month was seen at three other sites on the West Coast.
