A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

  • Norton Simon Museum: “Exceptionally Gifted: Recent Donations to the Norton Simon Museum (2002-2008)” includes Asian antiquities, contemporary photographs, and even a Picasso linocut. A majority of the pieces are being shown for the first time. Through Aug.31.
  • Natural History Museum: Now through Sept. 7, take a peaceful nature walk in the Pavilion of Wings, where 40 butterfly and moth species fly freely around a beautiful landscape. By the way, have you noticed how those neon blue ones are impossible to photograph? They always seem to be in flight. (If you get a photo, send us one!)
  • MOCA: “A Changing Ratio: Painting and Sculpture From the Collection” shows sculpture’s move toward prominence in the ’50s and ’60s, even in the typically two-dimensional media of painting. The concept is illustrated with works by Lichtenstein, Pollock, Rauschenberg, Warhol, and others in a large exhibit at the Grand Avenue location through Sept. 28.
