A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is alive with the sweet sound of strings this week, including the Juilliard String Quartet, the Tokyo String Quartet, and the Lyris Quartet.  Cellist Ani Aznavoorian and Camerata Pacifica also will be passing through on schedule.  A great week to hear world-class string music!

Juilliard String Quartet
Coleman Chamber Music Concerts presents the Juilliard String Quartet with Nick Eanet and Ronald Copes (violins), Samuel Rhodes (viola), and Joel Krosnick (cello).  A fine Sunday afternoon is to be had with Haydn’s Quartet in A Major, Op.20 No.6, Bartok’s Quartet No.5, and Brahms’ Quartet in A Minor, Op.51 No.2. Bartok played by the Juilliard Quartet will be the high point of my week.

Tokyo String Quartet

The Colburn Chamber Music Society brings the Tokyo String Quartet to Zipper Hall Sunday afternoon.  The Tokyo Quartet has established itself as one of Deutsche Grammophon’s leading international string quartets.   Sunday, we can hear Quartet members Martin Beaver and Kikuei Ikeda, violins, Kazuhide Isomura, viola, and Clive Greensmith, cello, along with outstanding Colburn faculty and student musicians performing Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major, Op.20, and Tchaikovsky’s String Sextet in D Minor, Op.70, Souvenir de Florence.

Camerata Pacifica
Camerata Pacifica Artistic Director and flutist Adrian Spence will be joined by cellist Ani Aznavoorian  and pianist Anna Polonsky with a program that features flute and cello, including Jindrich Feld’s  Four Pieces for solo flute and Flute Sonata, Bohuslav Martinu’s Trio for flute, cello, and piano, H.300, Alexander Tcherepnin’s Suite for cello solo, Op.76, and the Brahms Sonata in E Minor, for piano and cello, Op.38.

Lyris String Quartet with Chamber Music Palisades

The Lyris String Quartet (featuring Alyssa Park and Shalini Vijayan, violins, Luke Maurer, viola, and Timothy Loo, cello, joins the Chamber Music Palisades with the LA Phil’s Anne Gabriele, oboe, and Co-Artistic Directors Susan Greenberg, flute, and Delores Stevens, piano, to perform the world premiere of Peter Golub’s Quintet for Oboe, String Trio and Piano, Ginastera’s Impressiones de la Puna, Samuel Barber’s  Songs for Flute and Piano, and Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet, Op. 44.
