A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

Some of the finest pianists in the world join the Los Angeles Philharmonic in concerts this week at Disney Hall with something for every listener, young and old alike.  An extraordinary line-up of artists will perform, including such luminaries as Emanuel Ax, Andras Schiff, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Yana Reznik.

Saturday morning the Los Angeles Philharmonic will present a Toyota Symphonies for Youth concert with conductor Manuel Lopez and a program that illustrates the history of the piano with music by Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, and Chopin.  Pianist Yana Reznik will be joined by special guest Emanuel Ax and actor Carl Palmer.

Saturday evening finds Emanuel Ax again on stage with the Phil, but with Gustavo Dudamel on the podium.  If you were fortunate enough to procure tickets for the concert, it will perhaps be one of the highpoints of the season.  The pair should be stunning in their effect, and the selections will be the perfect vehicle for the mix:  Weber’s Overture to Der Freischütz, the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 4.   Look for Culture Spot LA’s review of the concert.
