A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

Fuzjko Hemming

Swedish-Japanese pianist Fuzjko Hemming is something of a legend, having started her professional career at the age of 69 and sold more than 2 million copies of her debut CD, all after suffering hearing loss. The 80-year-old will kick off her U.S. tour with an Arigato Charity Concert on Thursday, July 5, in Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Culture Spot LA readers can take advantage of a special offer for 25% off tickets (regular ticket prices are $50 to $100). See below for details.

Despite her severe hearing difficulties and turbulent life, including time as a refugee, Hemming
has beaten the odds to become a highly acclaimed concert pianist, who has platinum records
and several prestigious music awards to her name. Gramophone Magazine said: “There is no secret to her appeal: Fuzjko Hemming is not just playing the piano; she is seeming to enter a
romantic reverie to find and unfold the music’s beauties and intentions.”

Her Los Angeles concert will feature works by Chopin, Debussy, Liszt and Mussorgsky. A portion of the proceeds from the Arigato Charity Concert will go to the 2011 Japan Relief Fund for victims of the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.

The tour continues to San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts Theatre (July 15), Dallas’ Eisemann Center for Performing Arts (July 21) and New York City’s Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center (July 28).
