A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

The San Francisco-based Lines Ballet and its innovative choreographer/director, Alonzo King, together with Grammy Award-winning tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and ninth-generation Sarangi master Sabir Khan bring their centuries-old artistic foundations to merge this Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 1-3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Bram Goldsmith Theater of The Wallis.

This Southern California debut of the evening-length “Sutra” marks the ballet company’s first appearance in the Southland since 2015. This new collaboration continues King’s interest in cultural traditions mixing with his extension of classical ballet technique. The resulting juxtaposition of poly-rhythmic sound and clean lines, shapes and energy forges what one reviewer at the Boston Globe deemed a “spectacular burst of musical and choreographic creativity.”
