A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

International City Theatre presents “Red,” the fiery and fiercely funny Tony, Drama Desk and Drama League Award winner for best play by John Logan. When abstract expressionist and celebrated bad boy of the art world Mark Rothko lands a commission to create a definitive group of murals for an exclusive restaurant, he hires an assistant — and what takes place between them is a visceral experience that spills off the stage and will forever change the way you see the color red. As he and his young assistant mix the paint, stretch the canvas and prime the surface, Rothko must reconcile not only the mix of art and commerce he’s creating, but also his relationship with the new generation of artists who threaten his very legacy.

Two lucky Culture Spot LA readers can win a pair of tickets to the show on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 2 p.m. To be entered for a chance to win, please email editor@culturespotla.com with “Red” in the subject line. Winners will be notified next week.

“Red” opens on Aug. 23 and continues through Sept. 15 at International City Theatre, Long Beach Performing Arts Center, 300 E. Ocean Blvd., Long Beach 90802. Tickets are $29-$45. Call (562) 436-4610 or visit www.InternationalCityTheatre.com.
