A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

Theatre Raymond Kabbaz presents LA-based composer/conductor Derrick Spiva, Jr. and Bridge to Everywhere, a 16-piece ensemble dedicated to performing music by composers who celebrate cultural diversity through interwoven musical traditions, on Friday, Jan. 20.

“Music Without Borders” features five world premieres of original works by Spiva, all inspired by traditional music from Ghana, India, Mexico, Eastern Europe and beyond. The orchestral works combine minimalist aesthetics of Steve Reich and John Adams with West African traditional rhythms and classical Hindustani melodic shapes and cycles. In addition to other world-fusion oriented pop pieces drawing from hip-hop, rock and metal, as well as Mexican, Balkan, Indian and African folk music.

The ensemble is comprised of musicians whose passion and excitement for new music move them to explore the unfamiliar. From harp and string quartet, to oud and electric guitar, piano to synthesizer, and tabla to gung-gong drums, Bridge to Everywhere strives to create new connections between instruments, genres, cultures and people.
