Premiering new work with live music, the highly acclaimed and well-established Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Third Coast Percussion present three shows this Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 10-12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bram Goldsmith Theater of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.
This collaboration between the Chicago-based quartet of Grammy Award-winning classically trained percussionists and two Los Angeles-based commercial dance makers — Emma Portner in “For All Its Fury” and Teddy Forance’s “Everything Must Go” — is propelled by a powerful score by British singer/songwriter/composer Devonté Hynes, aka Blood Orange.
Also on the program are three pieces drawn from the company’s wide-ranging repertory: Ohad Naharin’s “Decadance/Chicago,” Alejandro Cerrudo’s “PACOPEPEPLUTO” and Crystal Pite’s “Solo Echo.”
The first has been created specifically for the company only six months ago by the former artistic director and now resident choreographer for Israel’s internationally renowned Batsheva Dance Company. This quintet for female performers includes music by Arvo Part and spoken word by Bobbie Jene Smith (contains explicit language).
Accompanied by a medley of pre-recorded Dean Martin tunes of the 1950s and ’60s, “PACOPEPEPLUTO” is a light-hearted trio for men choreographed by the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s first-ever resident choreographer, Cerrudo.
Pite’s “Solo Echo,” a septet for both genders, is grounded in Pulitzer Prize recipient and former American Poet Laureate Mark Strand’s “Lines for Winter.” Brahms’ “Sonata for Cello and Piano in E Minor” helps to carry this weighty reflection on life, loss and death. The dance maker is associate choreographer of Nederlands Dans Theater and associate dance artist of Canada’s National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
Sounds like a very meaty program of definitely well-danced short works.
