Award-winning, internationally acclaimed, Burbank-born b-boy Jacob “Kujo” Lyons is bringing his interdisciplinary dance and physical theater company, Lux Aeterna, to the Théâtre Raymond Kabbaz for a single performance this Thursday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. Showcasing the troupe’s eclectic fusion of movement styles — contemporary, ballet, Brazilian capoeira, gymnastics, breakdance, circus and aerial arts — in the premiere of the fully realized “Eponym,” this dynamic group of artists/athletes/daredevils will demonstrate their heart-stopping skills in an evening-length adventure.
Drawing physical invention from as many sources as one body could express, the work is accompanied by not-to-be-expected sound and music selections, raising the bar in choreographic creativity. Catch a preview here. Of Kujo, former Los Angeles Times Dance Critic Lewis Segal said, “There is no more-brilliant choreographer in Los Angeles at the moment.”
The company has performed in local and international contemporary and hip-hop dance festivals and in foreign commercials, and Kujo himself has consulted for Cirque de Soleil and been featured in films and music videos. “Eponym,” which is defined online as “a person, real or imaginary, from whom something, as a tribe, nation or place, takes or is said to take its name,” has previously been presented in Central America and northern Europe.
Having seen the company at the annual Ford Amphitheater’s Juice Hip-Hop Dance Festival and at REDCAT’s Studio series, I’m sure the dancing will leave many mouths agape.
