Pacific Opera Project opens its 2019 season with Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” as you’ve never seen it before — set in classic video games from the early 1980s — in a return to the El Portal Theatre. Performances take place on March 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10, including two Sunday matinees. The “super” production transports Papageno, Tamino and the gang to the land of video games resembling Mario Bros. and Zelda with a new English libretto by Artistic Director Josh Shaw and E. Scott Levin. Edward Benyas conducts.
The production’s cast includes Arnold Livingston Geis (LA Opera, Washington National Opera) as Tamino, Alexandra Schoeny (Cincinnati Opera, Philadelphia Orchestra) as Pamina, and E. Scott Levin (LA Opera) as Papageno.

POP’s 2019 productions also include a new bilingual (Japanese/English) production of “Madama Butterfly” on April 6, 13 and 14; its highly acclaimed 2013 production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Mikado” on Aug. 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 28, 30 and 31; and POP’s signature modern take on Puccini’s “La Boheme” aka “The Hipsters” on Dec. 5, 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14 at 8 p.m.
