In its traditional role, REDCAT, the performance space located just below Disney Hall, is bringing some new performance ideas into the Southland to whet our appetites and nourish our creative souls. From Thursday through Sunday, March 26-29 (Thursday-Saturday at 8:30 p.m., Sunday at 7 p.m.), Zoe / Juniper will fill the stage with their immersive duet, “BeginAgain.”
The company of dance maker Zoe Scofield and visual artist Juniper Shuey collaborate on this project with celebrated dancer Ariel Freedman to forge what promotional materials describe as “an intoxicating theatrical adventure” that includes ”striking projections and kaleidoscopic paper sculptures . . . supple-edged choreography . . . [and] swirling and lush visuals.”
Structuring the piece around the simultaneous performance of two parallel solos that weave in and around each other, the work is said to explore concepts such as “the multiplicity of self, memory and perspective.” It juxtaposes a primal and animalistic movement vocabulary amidst one that is more “balletic, virtuosic and otherworldly.”
An original sound score accompanies the duet, created by Morgan Henderson and Erin Jorgensen. Costumes have been designed by Christine Meyers, lighting design by Amiya Brown and sound design by Julian Martlew.
Zoe / Juniper has been hitting all the performance hot spots across the country and beyond since 2005, earning awards and support from viewers coast to coast to coast. The two artists call Seattle home, but their performances and installations have been appreciated and applauded in almost every location where new dance is seen. Flying under the mainstream radar, ex-Seattle-ite and REDCAT Executive Director Mark Murphy once again brings a fresh look into our midst.
Check it out.
