As life begins to slightly resemble its pre-pandemic existence, Beverly Hill’s Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts presents another weekend of contemporary dance in the Bram Goldsmith Theater. This Thursday, Nov. 4, through Saturday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m., locally based Ate9 Dance Company will perform the world premiere of “Joy.”
Choreographed by Artistic Director Danielle Agami to an original score by Isaiah Gage, this feature-length work whimsically reflects on habits and addictions, elation and despair with up-close-and-personal peeks at the dancers’ mental and physical situations.
This is the second time The Wallis has engaged this exciting young ensemble, and the Friday show will be followed by an interactive talk-back once the curtain falls. Agami, who received the 2016 Princess Grace Award for Choreography and the 2018 Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship for Women Leaders in Dance, has collaborated with several LA music and opera institutions. The company has toured nationally, and as a former eight-year member of the Tel Aviv-based Batsheva Dance Company, Agami taught the Gaga movement technique across the globe. She is now forging a new vocabulary called Oomi.
As always, the theater protects its visitors with a requirement of proof of vaccination or recent testing and wearing masks.
