Continuing its ongoing mission to bring cutting-edge live performance to Los Angeles, the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) welcomes a unique collaboration between world-renowned poet and MacArthur Fellow Claudia Rankine and choreographer and Guggenheim Fellow Will Rawls. “What Remains” will be presented this Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 9-11, at 8:30 p.m.
Created in 2017 and performed at venues across the country since then, a quartet of performers brings Rankine’s texts to life. Zeroing in on her poetic explorations of racial violence and the erasure of black citizens that pre-dates the pandemic and its subsequent movements, the work takes on new resonance in the here and now.
Both lead artists come to LA with a full portfolio of accomplishments and recognition. Rankine has published six books of poetry and is currently teaching at Yale. Rawls has performed and taught throughout the United States and is the 2021 recipient of the Herb Alpert Award in Dance.
