A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

Returning with a mini-festival of new contemporary choreography, the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble’s ongoing Dance at the Odyssey series runs these next two weekends, from Friday, July 14, through Sunday, July 23, 2023. Thursday-Saturday evening shows start at 8 p.m. The Saturday matinee begins at 2 p.m. The Sunday events start at 5 p.m. More information here.

In this “pop-up” summer festival, there are eight performances showcasing eight world premieres and a work in progress.

  • Corina Kinnear premieres “Lost Time” and Hannah Miller presents “BOXED” on Friday, July 14, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 15, at 2 p.m.
  • Alejandro Perez reveals “Side by Side” on Saturday, July 15, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, July 16, at 5 p.m:
  • Friidom shares the four-part installation “Stages” on Thursday, July 20, at 8 p.m.
  • Marcella Lewis displays her work in progress, “Spectacle of Ritual,” on Friday, July 21, at 8 p.m.
  • Lara Wilson delivers “The Interim” on Saturday, July 22, at 8 p.m.
  • Vanessa Hernández Cruz premieres a three-part experimental solo “Metal, Plastic, Skin” and performance artist Chie Saitoo uncovers “borderlines” on Sunday, July 23, at 5 p.m.

Curated by series founder Barbara Mueller–Wittman, many of these dance makers have created movement responses to life’s personal and societal challenges. In the process, they have cultivated a community from disparate dance backgrounds that enlivens the stage with thoughtful and thought-provoking emotionally driven work.
