Bringing concert dance onto the nightclub floor, the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA is presenting “Wake” for only one show, this Friday, Oct. 11. Created by Jay Carlon with Micaela Tobin, this world premiere will take place at Nightclub Don Quixote in East LA.
Described in promotional materials as “a necessary ritual” that combines performance and queer nightlife, the event unearths ideas about “identity, ancestry and the complexities of the diaspora.” Filipino-American Carlon, who’s been listed as one of “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine, collaborates with other Asian American Pacific Island creatives, including sound artist Tobin, nightlife collectives QNA and SEND NOODZ, and Filipiniana fashion house VINTA GALLERY. This new work “provides communities born in the wake of the U.S. empire an opportunity to grieve, heal and find solace in the collective.”
The show’s timeline begins at 8 p.m., with access to the club and DJ Hey Aswang, SEND NOODZ at 9:30 p.m. (performances by Bibi Discoteca & Miss Shu Mai, Skirt Cocaine, Goddess Yuki), “Wake” at 10 p.m. and QNA (Queer and Asian) DJs hosting more “dancing until late.” There is limited paid parking nearby, ride sharing is recommended, and the evening is labeled as “a standing room event.”
‘Wake” is presented as a part of Mapping Los Angeles, a new series of relationship-building collaborations and artist-led engagements across the city that expands CAP UCLA’s cultural production in creative entrepreneurial activities. Co-produced by Standard Stages and INTERIM Corporation, “Wake” is also made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mellon Foundation.
