A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

An accomplished new dance innovator now on the faculty at UCLA’s World Arts and Culture/Dance department, Miguel Gutierrez is making his group work Los Angeles premiere with “Super Nothing” this Friday and Saturday, June 13-14, at 8 p.m. at the Freud Playhouse.

Described in promotional materials as an amalgam of choice moments from a living archive of rehearsals that are modified by the current performers, the creator jokingly refers to the evening-length work as “epic.” Incorporating improvisation and impacted by conversations between the performers during its gestation period, ‘Super Nothing’ is more than a dance: it’s a living, breathing investigation into the stories our bodies carry and how we shape history, connection and communication through movement.”

The piece is inspired by Feminist, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet/author, bell hooks’ statement that “Moving, we confront the realities of choice and location.” In it, Jay Carlon, Justin Faircloth, Wendell Gray and Evelyn Sanchez “navigate a shifting physical terrain of intimacy, negotiation and pent up feeling to create a world where we rethink what it means to come together.”

New York-born to Colombian parents, Gutierrez is the recipient of many national and international awards and fellowships for his groundbreaking work in dance. These include Guggenheim, US Artist, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, NY Foundation for the Arts, Doris Duke and four Bessies. He is also a published essayist, composer, singer and Feldenkrais practitioner.
