Our local global explorer of new and exciting live performance, the Roy and Edna Disney Cal Arts Theater (REDCAT) presents a collaborating team of Israeli performing artists on stage this Thursday through Sunday (8:30 p.m., except 7 p.m. on Sunday). Going by the collective moniker of L-E-V, ex-Batsheva Dance Company house choreographer Sharon Eyal and her partner/accomplice Gai Behar will be joined by (it looks like) eight dancers in their touring intermission-less ensemble work, “House.”
Using terms like “passionate . . . high voltage . . . sultry . . . intoxicating . . . and eye-opening,” promotional materials promise an hour-long production “celebrated for its astute confluence of movement, music, lighting, fashion, art and technology.” Accompanied by an original score by multifaceted musician, drummer and creative DJ Ori Lichtik the aural environment is created on the spot and uniquely for each live performance.
While press materials describe Behar as a “notorious mover and a shaker of Tel Aviv’s live music, art and nightlife scenes,” award-winning dance maker Eyal creates her movement from her own improvisation, following along the Gaga movement technique’s physicality and unexpected shape and flow (or lack thereof). Having set work on dance companies from Chicago to Norway and Germany, she describes “House” as “less about a story and more about a dream.”
Having evolved from choreographer Ohad Naharin’s talented pool of creative artists in the Middle East, who knows where the next step will land. With dancers labeled as “fiercely talented” and moving with “expressive precision,” it sounds like something not to be missed.
