A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

After a week-long residency with students at Chapman University, Doug Varone and Dancers will take the stage at the Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts in Orange. For only one performance on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m., the acclaimed New York City-based contemporary dance ensemble will present a trio of repertory works.

Continuing its 39th season, the choreographer-led collection of dynamic movers will demonstrate the prowess, emotional range and kinetic breadth that make it a hallmark in the field. On the program are “Double Octet,” “Home” and “Restore.”

A duet created in 1988, “Home,” reveals the “beauty and complexity of the human experience.” As stated in promotional materials, “Double Octet” (2021), extends to a larger cast the dancemaker’s described “devotion to the humanity and virtuosity of dance.” The final piece on the program, “Restore,” has been reviewed in Bachtrack, an online music and dance journal, as “the kind of finale that brings an audience to its feet.”

Varone has been recognized with a plethora of national awards including a Guggenheim fellowship, an OBIE Award, the Jerome Robbins Fellowship at the Bogliasco Institute in Italy and two individual Bessie Awards. In 2015, he was awarded both a Doris Duke Artist Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Dance Guild. He has collaborated with and directed opera and has made dances for other companies across the globe.
