As the first woman to head a major American orchestra and recently inducted into the Classical Music Hall of Fame, Musical America’s 2009 Conductor of the Year Marin Alsop makes her Orange County debut, leading the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in its first West Coast tour in 24 years. On March 28 at Segerstrom Concert Hall, hear an exciting and primal showcase of the orchestra’s rhythm section in a performance of Jennifer Higdon’s Grammy Award-winning Percussion Concerto, a 25-minute work featuring an extensive dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra and written especially for the featured percussion soloist, Colin Currie. Other works include Aaron Copland’s beloved Fanfare for the Common Man, Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony and Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman.
Wednesday, March 28, at 8 p.m.
Pre-concert lecture by Christopher Russell at 7 p.m.
