LA-born, but now NY-based choreographer/director Faye Driscoll returns to her hometown to present “Weathering” on the downtown REDCAT stage. What one New York Times critic labeled as “an enthralling, epically adventurous work” will be presented on three evenings, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6-8, at 8:30 p.m.
According to promotional materials, this recently created piece is performed by 10 movers negotiating a raft-like stage. It starts with small, hard-to-see gestures that evolve into “high-velocity sprints and collisions.” Driscoll calls this “a multi-sensory flesh sculpture surging through the Anthropocene.” There is a vocal score, and audience members seated close to the performers are drawn into a hurricane of smells, sweat and labored breathing.
Driscoll is the recipient of several major awards, residencies and commissions, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Doris Duke and Bessie Awards and Randjelović/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist at New York Live Arts. Her work has been seen across the nation, as well as in Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, Greece, Brazil, Australia, Canada and more.
Thursday’s show is followed by informal conversations with the artists in the REDCAT lounge; Friday’s event is followed by a Q&A with Driscoll; on Saturday, the company invites Angelenos to share the company ritual warmup from 2 to 3:30 in the REDCAT theater. Pre-register for this here.
Please note: “Weathering” contains nudity and loud sounds. Limited amounts of essential oils will be used within the show. Please contact the Box Office for any specific allergen queries. Late seating for the performance is not allowed.
