Internationally acclaimed and locally based, the Los Angeles Dance Project hosts a six-week contemporary dance event, the L.A. Dances Festival, at its downtown home from Sept. 26 through Nov. 24. Three distinctly different programs run Wednesday/Thursday through Saturday/Sunday nights with shows beginning at 8 p.m. The full schedule is here.
Presenting 10 Los Angeles premieres (six are world premieres), each piece will be performed by the 12 ultra-articulate LADP dancers. Collaborators include dancemakers Benjamin Millepied (LADP artistic director) and Kyle Abraham (2013 Kennedy Center Fellow), and there will be a new production of pioneering choreographer Bella Lewitzky’s groundbreaking 1970 creation, “Kinaesonata,” and work by Shannon Gillen, Madeline Hollander, Charm La’Donna, Gianna Reisen,Tino Sehgal, Janie Taylor, Emily Mast and Zack Winokur.
Composers Evan Mast and Celia Hollander and visual artists Benjamin Ball, James Buckhouse, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Charles Gaines and Liam Gillick flesh out each production with original scores and visual designs.
Founded in 2012, the company regularly tours across the globe and is deepening its roots in our city with this assemblage of performances. Promotional materials state that “it dedicates the festival to the city it calls home and to its creative collaborators.”
