A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

Before setting off on its national tour, Invertigo Dance Theatre will present the world premiere of “Formulae & Fairy Tales” this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13, at 7:30 p.m. at The Eli and Edythe Broad Stage in Santa Monica. Choreographed by the company’s Founding Artistic Director Laura Karlin in collaboration with the dancers and three composers, this new work hurls seven movers into an interplay of the mathematical cunning of WWII code-breaking genius, Alan Turing, and the mythology of his favorite just-then-released Disney film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”

Referencing artificial intelligence, cryptography, Turing’s sexuality, British morality and the first feature-length animated film in Technicolor©, “Formulae & Fairy Tales” explodes from a base of hyper-kinetic, high-impact activity and floor-based movement.

One of only 20 recipients of a National Dance Project production grant, Invertigo Dance Theatre is 12 years old and has performed at such prestigious venues as the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Ford Theatres, Los Angeles Theatre Center and Grand Park. The company is regularly invited to perform and give master classes at festivals such as Celebrate Dance, the Los Angeles Dance Festival, the Seattle International Dance Festival, National Dance Day (Seattle), and Dance Camera West. Invertigo was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2016 McCallum Theatre Choreography Festival. The company has created partnerships with the Craft and Folk Art Museum, Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Plaza de la Raza, and Santa Barbara Museum of Art, among others.
