The Batsheva Dance Company, a 61-year-old entity named after its founding supporter, the Israeli Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild, brings its 2022 creation, “MOMO,” to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for three shows on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m.
Part of Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at the Music Center, the U.S. premiere of this evening-length work for 11 movers is set against the score from the album “Landfall.” This soundscape was composed by the iconic Laurie Anderson with the world-renowned Kronos Quartet. Additional music sources for the piece include Philip Glass, Arca and Maxim Waratt.
Choreographed by former Artistic Director and now Resident Dancemaker Ohad Naharin, in cooperation with Ariel Cohen and the dancers themselves, “MOMO” is described in promotional materials as “a bold exploration of masculinity, vulnerability and identity.” The work uncovers “raw emotion, mesmerizing choreography and a boundary-pushing approach to dance.”
Naharin has long been a Southern California favorite, and his work has been internationally awarded and shared with countless repertory groups. He is the creator of the Gaga movement technique, a physical language that seeks to connect users’ bodies with their imaginations.
“MOMO” features mature themes that may not be suitable for younger audiences. Viewer discretion is advised.
