In its current LA artist-supportive programming initiative, the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA is presenting the newest work created by interdisciplinary artist d.Sabela grimes at the Nate Holden Performing Arts Center for only one performance, this Thursday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m.
“Parable of Portals” is described in promotional materials as a “constellation of sound-driven dance improvisation, poetic storytelling and embodied meditation.” Labeled as both ritual and performance, the work features a quartet of onstage interpreters investigating poet/author Octavia E. Butler’s “profound exploration of survival, resilience and community” that are part of her Parable Series of novels.
Jumping off from the literary source material, the audience is invited to join hyper-empathetic African American teenager and fictional protagonist Lauren Olamina, as she navigates her journey through a world where “faith and community give power to change.”
grimes has been recognized by the U.S. Artist award and a County of Los Angeles Performing Arts Fellowship (COLA) and is currently on the faculty at the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at USC.
