A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

Founded in 2012 by dancer/choreographer Benjamin Millepied and others, L.A. Dance Project will premiere new and re-mount signature works from their repertory in “Spring Dances” at their studio theater downtown. Performances begin Thursday, May 2, at 8 p.m. and continue through Sunday, May 12, at 5 p.m. Other showtimes are Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sundays at 1 and 5 p.m. Check here to see the schedule.

Each of the two alternating programs highlights the longstanding movement/music collaborations between Millepied and neo-classical composer Nico Muhly. These include the new-to-local audiences “Me.You.We.They.,” which premiered last month in Paris and either “Moving Parts” (2012) in program A or “Triade” (2008) in program B. Also at each event will be the world premiere of “Sleepwalker’s Encyclopedia,” created by former New York City Ballet Principal Dancer and current company Rehearsal Director Janie Taylor. This piece involves a set design by American painter Benjamin Styer.

Company Artistic Director Millepied has performed in and choreographed for his own and an international array of prestigious dance companies and locations. Like Taylor, he is a former principal dancer with the NYC Ballet. He has also been the director of dance at the Paris Opera Ballet and has appeared in and made dances for the movies “Black Swan” and “Dune.”
