Concluding its 26-year critically acclaimed presence in the contemporary global dance world, the Akram Khan Company will say goodbye to Los Angeles audiences with its swan song touring production, “Thikra: Night of Remembering,” in Royce Hall on the UCLA campus Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, at 7 p.m.
The work is described in promotional materials as an opportunity to witness the “spellbinding movement“ that combines contemporary styles with classic South Asian vocabularies (Kathak and Bharatanatyam) and the artist’s creative license to conjure an intergenerational gathering of women. This one-night fictional event “awakens the spirit of those who came before,” where the performers “transcend time, uniting the past and present in a profound act of renewal.”
There’s an original score by Karnatik music virtuoso Aditya Prakash, sound design by Tony Award-winning sound designer Gareth Fry, lighting design by Zeynep Kepekli, dramaturgy by Blue Pieta, scenography and costume design by award-winning Saudi artist Manal AlDowayan, and an international cast of women performing contemporary and Bharatanatyam dance.
The company and its director are recipients of many international awards and recognition, including New York’s Bessie Award, two of Great Britain’s Laurence Olivier Awards and others. The dance maker has also set work on the English National Ballet and designed the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremonies in London.
