A Selective Guide to the Arts in Los Angeles

Though its philanthropic founder recently passed away, Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance at The Music Center will present the West Coast premiere of heralded five-time Tony® Award-nominated director and choreographer, Camille A. Brown, at the Ahmanson Theater this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12 and 13, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m.

Continuing her investigation of what a New York Times critic described as “Black Joy,” the artist and her company of up to 18 dancers, accompanied at the performance by seven musicians, draw on an assemblage of movement vocabularies including hip-hop, ballet, African dance, modern dance and tap in “I AM.” Inspired by two contemporary film and TV sources — HBO’s “Lovecraft Country” and the pulse of the film “Drumline” — this 2024 creation “pushes boundaries and takes Brown’s signature interweaving of African diasporic dance forms to new heights.”

The artist’s CV lists pages of awards and positive reviews for her contributions to Broadway, opera, film and television. Born and raised in New York City, a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts and a former company member of Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE, Brown created her company in 2014. Since then, it has performed throughout all the prestigious stages in the United States.
